Lowell Walks: Lowell’s LGBTQ+ History with Resi Polixa

Join us in celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month with a special Lowell Walks on LGBTQ+ history. Explore the diverse layers of Lowell's LGBTQ+ history and how it overlaps with mill workers, immigrant neighborhoods, and more! Meet at Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street). Free parking for program participants is available at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District Garage (350 Dutton Street). Lowell Walks are a series of guided tours in and around downtown Lowell that explore the unique history and stories of our city. This year’s lineup will include tours exploring Lowell’s Black History, the life and writings of Jack Kerouac, the city’s founding, and many more. Please plan to arrive at the Visitor Center 10 minutes before the tour starts for facilities and logistics. Plan ahead, dress for the weather and remember to bring water! Mask guidelines: Consistent with CDC guidance regarding areas of high transmission, visitors to Lowell National Historical Park, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask inside all park buildings. While you do not need to wear a mask on the outdoor walking tour, anyone planning to enter the Visitor Center before or after the program must wear a mask.

Explore the sites Jack Kerouac writes about in his book "Visions of Gerard". Learn about Kerouac’s family history and Lowell's French-Canadian culture in the 1920s. This 90-minute program begins at 10 a.m. at the Greenhalge Elementary School (149 Ennell Street). Please plan to arrive at the designated meeting place 10 minutes before the tour starts for facilities and logistics. Plan ahead, dress for the weather, and remember to bring water! Free Parking is available at 350 Dutton Street in the Hamilton Canal Innovation District garage. Masks are currently required inside of all federal park buildings. This urban hike will cover a roundtrip loop of approximately 3 miles and we encourage everyone to walk, stroll, or stride at their own pace along the way. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather, bring plenty of water, and anything else you may need to safely enjoy your hike. Parking Lowell National Historical Park visitors may park at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District (HCID) parking garage at 350 Dutton Street. Wellness on the Walkways: BARK Ranger Dog Walk

Together with their humans, Bark Rangers are welcome to join us for a guided walk.  This free Ranger-lead program begins at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street) and will last approximately 90 minutes. Bark Ranger walks are suited for well-behaved dogs on leashes of 6 feet or less (no retractable leashes). During Bark Ranger programs, pets and people walk at a leisurely pace, learning about Lowell and its history as they go.  Bark Rangers and their humans are encouraged to act as responsible stewards for our public lands by following the National Park Service B.A.R.K. Ranger rules: Bag your poop, Always use a leash, Respect wildlife, and Know where you can go. Special note: Those without pets are always welcome to join us on these walks. Wellness on the Walkways: Birding Walk

Join us for a birding walk along Lowell’s waterways.  This free Ranger-lead program begins at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street).  The walk will take place over the course of approximately two hours and 1.5 miles of terrain. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring plenty of water and anything else you may need to safely enjoy your walk. Both first-time birders and more experienced folks are welcome.  Together we will learn some of the basics of birding as we discover and identify the birds around us.  We will have some binoculars and field guides available to borrow during the walk but please feel free to bring your own if you have them!
