SUMMARY:Tyler Grecco
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 1861\, President Abraham Lincoln put out a call for volunteers to suppress the secessionist rebellion brewing in the south. As a result\, thousands of men from local communities like Concord\, Acton\, and Lowell answered the call as “Minute Men.” Grecco will focus on the Minutemen of 1861 and their connection to the Minutemen of 1775\, 86 years earlier. The focus will be on Lowell’s contribution to the war effort in 1861\, tying in the socio-economic make up of Lowell in that period and their reliance on the cotton industry and chattel slavery system in the American south.

SUMMARY:2026 Ecofilm Series February Screening: Jaguar People (Tigre Gente)
DESCRIPTION:The Eco-film Series is back for its 14th season with 5 must-see\, feature-length films and a special selection of short films! \nMark your calendars for the last Tuesday of the month\, January – June! \nAbout the film: As China pours hundreds of billions of dollars into South American infrastructure\, jaguars are disappearing from the continent’s most protected rainforests. Targeted as substitutes for tiger parts\, which have historically been used in traditional Chinese medicines\, jaguars are now being trafficked at dangerously high numbers to fill a new market demand. Spanning mist-covered jungles in the Amazon to bustling wildlife markets in China\, Jaguar People (Tigre Gente) follows the storylines of two passionate people fighting to stop the jaguar trade before it’s too late. \nWe are grateful for our fantastic partners in this film series\, including our co-hosts\, the Lowell Film Collaborative\, and our venue partner\, the Lowell National Historical Park. Our event sponsors are Rockland Trust and the Mass Cultural Council. Thank you to our sponsors and partners for making the series possible!

SUMMARY:Hassan Melehy – Lowell Celebrates Kerouac
DESCRIPTION:For most of its 200-year history\, Lowell has been the home of immigrants. While growing up in the city’s Franco-American community\, Jack Kerouac knew people from many groups: Irish\, Italian\, Greek\, Eastern European\, Asian\, among others. Immigrants and their families figure prominently in his novels that take place in Lowell. When he wrote about traveling in America and across international borders\, he showcased a great variety of people and their cultures\, especially the migrants. The speaker will show how Kerouac painted the entire world as a place where migrants are true citizens.

SUMMARY:Full Works: Pawtucket Canal\, Suffolk Mill\, and Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION:Offered on a limited basis\, this special 2.5 hour-long ranger-guided tour provides a comprehensive look into how the water of the Merrimack River was harnessed into a complex canal system and used to power a massive cotton textile industry in Lowell in the 19th century. \nFirst\, join a Park Ranger for a guided boat tour along the Pawtucket Canal – the oldest canal in Lowell’s historic 5.6-mile canal system. There\, explore the River Transformed exhibit with a ranger to learn more about how waterpower was converted into mechanical power with a close up look at a historic turbine and fly wheel inside a former cotton mill. \n*Water Levels Permitting – Visitors may have the option to climb a short but steep historic granite staircase and explore the site of Francis Gate on foot. \nTours begin at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center\, 246 Market Street.
