Sylas Larned (he/they) is a choreographer, educator, performer, and dance major at Springfield College, who has been dancing for just over 20 years. Larned has a strong passion for educating others on the importance of representation and community, which appears as regular themes in their works.
Born and raised in Lowell MA, Larned spent their upbringing taking dance classes at Dance Expressions (DE), Tewksbury MA. He spent a total of 17 years training there, 10 of which were spent dancing competitively, studying a variety of different styles including jazz, tap, ballet, modern, contemporary, hip hop, and musical theater. He was taught by Jessica Durante, Noa Barankin, Nick Manna, Sarah Katrina, and more. DE was where Larned fell in love with dance, a love that only grew stronger over time.
Through the dance program at Springfield College (SC) they have gotten to take classes from artists such as Sarah Zehnder (Zehnder Dance), Kodee Van Nort, Jason Aryeh, Tara Murphy, Tatiana Desardouin (Passion Fruit Dance Company), and more. Under this program he has been able to do a variety of performances both on campus and in local schools through the SC Dance Repertory Company, under the artistic direction of Sarah Zehnder. Larned also had the privilege of teaching dance at local elementary and middle schools as well as at the Dance Studio of Wilbraham as a part of the Teaching Dance course and Repertory Company at SC. Larned was also able to choreograph and present their work through the SC Dance Clubs Annual Student Choreographed Spring Dance Concert in both 2022 and 2023. Most recently, Larned is excited to be presenting their work, “Disrupted Cadence” at the 2024 North Eastern American College Dance Association (ACDA) conference, in the adjudicated concert.
Although he does work in a variety of genres such as modern, contemporary and jazz, Larned’s most passionate and experienced in the style of tap. His tap choreography thus far has been described as energetic, rhythmically complex, satisfying, and entertaining. He has adopted the style of acapella tap from his mentor, Noa Barankin, and plans to continue exploring the possibilities that exist in rhythmical body explorations and tap without music. Larned is currently choreographing and working on his senior show works, where he plans to explore themes of gender identity, queerness, and community.
