Lowell National Historical Park and the Tsongas Industrial History Center are excited to welcome you for “Hands-On History” — part of the City of Lowell’s Bicentennial celebrations and the Tsongas Industrial History Center’s 35th anniversary! "Hands-On History" takes place the 2nd Saturday of each month through October on the 3rd Floor of the Boott Cotton Mills Museum (115 John St., Lowell, MA). This month’s activities include: Weaving on a hand loom, test different types of water wheels, and build your own model canal system to discover the innovative system that powered Lowell’s mills. These free, drop-in workshops are appropriate for all ages. Explore our educational workshop spaces at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum and discover how the Industrial Revolution shaped life then and now. Whether you’re a returning visitor or brand new to history, there’s something hands-on for everyone.

All aboard! Journey through downtown Lowell on a historic trolley for a guided tour along the rails to view Lowell's canal system and several of the gatehouse structures that powered Lowell's factories. Riders can play a round of 'gatehouse bingo' along the way or enjoy the views as a ranger and Sidney the Squirrel share the history of these important structures. All ages welcome! Tours will be offered Sunday, October 4 and Sunday October 11. The tour will begin at 10am at the Visitor Center (246 Market Street) and last 1.5 hours, ending at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum (115 John Street), with a special route that will span the entire trolley track system. Have your child decorate a Halloween themed cake. The spookier (or sillier) the better! One six-inch cake per ticket. Each child will receive one six-inch cake (vanilla or chocolate) that has already been leveled off and split into layers to eliminate the use of knives. Adults do not need to purchase an additional ticket unless they intend to decorate a cake as well.
In honor of Lowell’s 200th, the Lowell Bicentennial Committee is bringing added fun – including Lowell’s first-ever drone show, even more carnival rides, musical performances, and an expanded festival. Lowellians of all ages are encouraged to grab a costume and join us for the perfect autumnal day in Downtown Lowell.
