Meet Alisa: experiential artist, whose penchant for the creeptastic over decades lends itself to her mastery of digital fabrication, puppetry, costume design, and many more! With her background in education and shop management, Alisa extends to us her fierce—and fearless—approach to the art process.
1) How did you get started as an artist?
How did I get started as an artist? I think I’m still at the starting line even after being a professional creative for over thirty years. My practice is ever expanding with every rabbit hole I go down. Is it all art? Who knows. And, frankly, I thrive in the liminal spaces shaped by the not knowing. I hope I never stop starting.
2) When looking at your artistic career so far, what are you the most proud of?
I am most proud of right now—this moment. It is an amazing place to be when you can just lean into an idea with your full self. I gave myself that gift this year, to really commit no matter the final outcome. Sure, I set deadlines, create agendas and have goals. You have to when actualizing a multitiered concept. But what makes this moment so special is that it feels like everything has led up to NOW. Now to be brave. Now to be fierce. Now to be both kind and unapologetic. Now to dream when nightmares rage. Now to stand my ground and make space for my people. Now, no matter what comes after. This gift is permission.
3) What tips or resources do you have for aspiring artists in your field?
The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to be deeply curious about process. Consume a thousand different ways to approach a medium and make the process your own. Seek out expertise but be hesitant to claim it.
4) What do you hope to accomplish in your career?
I want to flip the artists’ script. It’s time to tell a different story about the lives of living artists.
