Community Spotlight: Maritza Lezama Flores

Date Posted: March 25, 2026

Meet Maritza: contemporary artist, muralist, and avid storyteller! Maritza takes finding her calling—and community—to a whole other level in this spotlight.

1) How did you get started as an artist?

I started to consider myself an artist when I graduated high school and found Refuge Art School, where I started taking classes and fell in love with art as an expressive creative outlet. I continued to take classes and learn as much as I could about different mediums to mainly explore other options. But I fell in love with them all, so I chose to just be an artist who doesn’t only stick to one medium. After our first end of semester art show, someone was interested in buying my piece and knowing the story behind it! That’s when I realized I loved the power of storytelling through art, no matter the medium. And that’s when I started to take it more seriously.

2) When looking at your artistic career so far, what are you the most proud of?

All of the connections and achievements that I’ve made. I’ve been able to help the youth with my knowledge and also make opportunities for others, and I’ve inspired them to create with my story.

3) What tips or resources do you have for aspiring artists in your field?

Don’t give up! If you’re in need of an artist community come to Western Avenue Studios! From here the opportunities and resources are endless.

4) What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

I hope that with my career I can help others heal from painful and traumatic experiences through creative outlets.
